Hi
I am one of the lucky guys to have this hi-end pre-amp that i bought about 10 years ago for a moderate price at that time. Till now it is performing as from day one. Flawless and superb. it is the 230v version very rare!! It powered different amps from Pass Labs X600 monoblocks , Acoustic Arts AMPII mkII to homemade tube amplifier on GM70 TUBES.
Everytime it was giving a very true sound without any coloration in the audio path. It has a amuzing start-up procedure. once turned on the big volume knob truns full from “zero to full and back to evenly calibrate the two channels. The potenciometer is one of a kind with two seperate for each channel connected by a sort of “clutch”
In order to aligne the two so each channel receives the same balanced sound.. It always comes back to zero everytime you power up. So you do not get suprized when your kid turns it fully up. (when off) and you switch it on without checking the position. That feature also has the MBL pre-amp.
I mainly listened to SACD/CD by ESOTERIC DV50 modified , but also lately to vinyl LP’s on TECHNICS SP10MKII/ SME3009 )modified ) and this preamp has a MC/MM input that suits most high grade cartridges . you can set-up the load for MC as well for MM. Fully balanced configuration both XLR and RCA inputs. If you can get one now do not hesitate get one.
I know that on the market there are pre-amps that are maybe better than the SONY but once campared to a blind test with another hi-end preamp .8 out of 10 people picked the TA ER1 as most musical sounded pre-amp.
It is a shame that SONY does not make such great audio anymore. I admire the design colour and overall style but mostly by the musicaulity. This pre-amp connected with a hi-end source of music can reveal the “badside” of CD / poorly arranged music material.
ENJOY THE MUSIC
regards
Greg
